I've got a good start on my tomato and cabbage seeds. I started Amish Paste, Brandywine and Isis Candy Cherry tomatoes and Early Jersey Wakefield cabbage. They are looking good so far. I've also started some basil (Genovese). I want to have a whole row of basil so I can have plenty for pesto this year. I'd love to have several jars of pesto in the freezer by summer's end.
My sweet potato slips get bigger everyday. I have at least two that should be ready to pick off and put in water this weekend.
I picked up my onion plants today. I bought a bundle of Big Daddy which are supposedly good storage onions.
To round it out, I've got these seeds ready to go:
- Peas - my Champion of England from last year and some Wando to fill the row out
- Beans - Roma II
- Beets - Cylindra
- Spinach and Arugula (new this year!)
- Sunflowers for the chickens
- Zucchini - Black Beauty
- Cucumber - National Pickling (still hoping for some good crock pickles!)
- Yukon Gold potatoes
- Red Pontiac potatoes
I'm hoping to get the onion, spinach, arugula, peas and potatoes in the ground this weekend. The cabbage needs a couple more weeks, but hopefully they'll be ready by May 1.
I have some pepper seeds that I think I'll start today. I don't know if they'll be ready in time, but it's worth a shot to save a little money.
So, tell me... How does your garden grow?

Not very well this year! LOL!! I've pretty much decided to go with a few tomato, eggplant and summer squash plants and barter the rest from my friend and at the Farmer's Market.
ReplyDeleteThank goodness for that Farmer's Market! It's great knowing there's a good back up if something doesn't produce or you just can't get it done. I know how you feel! Hubz says I'm putting too many irons in the fire by trying to do so much. We'll see how it goes.
DeleteI just started my cabbage seeds today, so I'm a little worried, but with the weather we have had this spring, maybe I'm okay.
ReplyDeleteI started a few of mine late too, Shannon. It's definitely worth trying, in my opinion. I'm hoping with a little extra love, they'll make it. Maybe I should sing to them? :)
DeleteThe garden looks great! Our onions are growing and so is the spinach, lettuce, and garlic. We had some brutal storms today, tomorrow will be the test of what survived.
ReplyDeleteWe’ve got our cool weather crops in and growing: lettuce, chard, kale, peas, cabbage, broccoli, and garlic. We have some peppers, eggplant, and tomato seedlings ready to be set out in a few weeks. Best wishes for a bountiful harvest! Thank you for sharing at the HomeAcre Hop! Look forward to seeing you again tomorrow: http://blackfoxhomestead.com/the-homeacre-hop/
