Our 1st big garden is underway!

Well, big for us, anyway.  When we lived in town we had a small backyard and an even smaller garden space - big enough for a dozen tomato plants and a few peppers.  We decided to go big this year.  Hubby tilled up a 28' x 55' plot - that's 1,540 square feet -  bigger than our entire house when we lived in town!

Don't pay attention to our lovely lawn.  It's a work in progress!

After he tilled it twice we spread out the load of composted cow manure we snagged from Mom & Dad's place.

He made sure I shoveled my fair share of poo.  He's good like that!

After fighting with the shovel and wheelbarrow for an hour or so, he tilled up a portion of the plot a 3rd time and then we were able to plant!  We got potatoes - Red Pontiac and Kennebec in the ground along with French Breakfast radishes, yellow onion, beets (Cylindra), spinach and green beans - Top Crop and Roma II.  That took us about 1/2 way through our 55' long plot so we still have plenty room for tomatoes, peppers, cucumber, zucchini and maybe a pumpkin or two.  Here are the taters before they were buried.

Afterwards we sat on the swing and enjoyed the view (actually fought off mosquitoes and tall grass that kept itching my legs!).  Apparently all that gardening, or rather, trying to dig up what was just planted pooped Josie out (our 1 year old malti-poo) because this is how she spent the evening before we went inside...

Here's hoping you find a cool spot to lay your belly!

  2. @Alana Jo - I know how that goes! It kills me that such a pretty little white puppy will roll in grossness - mud, dead birds, whatever other stink she can find. Because of that she's very familiar with the bath tub!
