Homemade Chocolate Syrup

Hubby and I don't have kids of our own (yet!), but my nephews and nieces are frequently over.  One thing they always request and I don't often have (and their Mom, knowing I don't have it and they want it, will sometimes bring over) is chocolate syrup for their milk.

Two of my nephews were coming over for pizza and movie night.  I was making homemade pizza, which they helped with, and hubby was hanging with the boys while my Sis and I went to the local theatre (Water for Elephants was playing - very good movie!).  Knowing what I know about these 2 boys and chocolate syrup, I decided to try a homemade version because 1.  It's easier than going to the store and 2.  I know exactly what's in it.

Homemade Hershey's Syrup

1 1/2 c. water
1 1/2 c. sugar (I used 3/4 c. sugar and 3/4 c. Splenda)
1 c. cocoa
1 t. vanilla extract

Combine sugar and cocoa, mix well, add water and, stirring often, heat until boiling and let boil for a couple minutes until the mixture thickens a bit.  If it still seems runny, don't worry, it will thicken as it cools.  Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.  Cool and store in refrigerator.

I used real Hershey's Cocoa in hopes of getting the same taste that they really like.

Love the throwback label!

It didn't take long for the mixture to come to a full boil.  I let it boil hard for about 3 minutes while constantly stirring to keep it from boiling over.

After the syrup cooled I stored it in a salad dressing storage bottle I picked up at a yard sale.  As you can see, it's very chocolatey and it does make a good chocolate milk.  I think the sugar-Splenda combo I used helps to keep it from being overly sweet.  It's also yummy on ice cream or drizzled on a spoon or finger even.  :)

What's funny is I went to the trouble of making it, had it on hand, and neither nephew asked for chocolate milk.  This is my own glass.  Oh, well....at least I'll have it for the next time they're over.

If you give it a try yourself, let me know what you think and how it turns out.

  2. Thanks Merissa! My nephews didn't notice a difference at all when I switched out the pre-made Hershey's syrup with my homemade version. Hubby enjoys it too. :)
