The stack of recipes on my Winter Projects list is slowly dwindling and I'm finding myself spending a lot of time in the kitchen, which isn't too far fetched for me. I really believe food is my love language. I think it is my Mother's and Grandmother's as well. We like to feed people. You can't spend too much time at Grandma's without her asking, "Have you 'et' yet?". I love that lady.
All this time measuring, stirring, baking, etc has got me thinking about my favorite kitchen tools. I thought I'd share with you my top 5 favorite kitchen tools.
Slotted Spoons
Slotted spoons are so handy. They're like having a mini-strainer at your fingertips. They're great for pulling okra out of the fryer; squeezing buttermilk out of freshly made butter; grabbing that bay leaf from a pot of soup; straining vegetables at the dinner table; and allowing Hubz to drain a little broth off his soup since he thinks it should eat like a meal every time. I have quite an eclectic collection and they each have their own story, which is part of the fun.
Pizza Screen
Cuisinart Mini Prep Food Processor
I received a 4-cup Cuisinart mini food processor as a wedding gift more than 10 years ago (from a great friend - Thanks GG!). That little thing has seen the inside of the dishwasher more times than I can count. I have a larger food processor now, but this little one is still so handy for smaller chores and it has fewer parts which means quicker clean up!
Here's a small list of what I use it for - making bread crumbs or cracker crumbs for a single recipe, whipping up some pesto, whipped cream or butter, chopping up fresh salsa and banana ice cream. Even though it's been 10 years, parts are still available for it and are very reasonable. Last year I had to purchase a new lid which was only $6. The price on the unit as a whole is pretty reasonable, too (currently under $40 at Amazon and worth every penny!).
Linen Kitchen Towels
I have a deep drawer full of kitchen towels. When I find cute ones on clearance or at a yard sale I can't pass them up. There are a handful of towels though that get more use than any others - my linen ones. They don't leave lint and they're great for just about anything except drying. I slide my homemade pizza off the screen and onto one of these towels for cutting; they're lightweight enough to cover dough when it's rising; and they work great for squeezing juice out of berries or grapes when making jelly.
Oil Mister
I haven't bought Pam, or the equivalent, in ages. I love having a refill-able oil mister. You just pull the top off, unscrew the sprayer and pour in whatever type of oil you want. With just a few pumps of the lid, it's ready to go!

I really like being able to choose the type of oil I'm spraying (usually Canola or Olive); I'm cutting down on waste by not throwing away used cans and after the initial cost of the sprayer (less than $10 on Amazon), I can have spray oil for a few pennies.
The type of sprayer I have is called a Misto. I like that it has a little stylish look to it. It works really well, has a very even spray and can go a few uses before needing to be pumped up again. Aside from spraying baking dishes, I use it to mist popcorn so my seasonings stick, to spray kale before making kale chips, to moisten breadcrumbs on top of fish fillets before baking and so on. Spray oil on its own is very handy in the kitchen and I love having a refillable sprayer.
Do any of these kitchen tools rank among your favorites? I'd love to hear what tools you use the most when cooking food for your family.
Good luck!

ReplyDeleteI LOVE my pizza stone from Pampered Chef. I bought one probably 8 years ago and use it probably once a week. I make dough in my breadmaker, then sprinkle with some local cheese, canned tomato sauce from our garden and top with whatever fresh veggies we have laying around. A super yummy, super cheap pizza! Thanks for the giveaway.
I don't have a Misto but need to get one. Thanks for mentioning!
ReplyDeleteThere's always room for a new tool in my kitchen. Thanks for the giveaway!

I'm a new follower via the google friend. I saw the slotted spoons and thought immediately that is something I don't have enough of....one spoon just doesn't cut it. Last one I bought had a welded on handle which was it's weak point...it broke...:( Looking forward to seeing what you are all about...
