Organic Herbs on the Cheap

A few weeks ago I was at my local Kroger supermarket doing my dreadful weekly shopping.  I like grocery shopping about as much as I like buying gas.  Ugh!  But...while there, I was perusing the organic and natural section, scanning for deals when I came across this.

Fresh organic dill on manager's special for 99 cents.  Organic herbs are usually pretty pricey so I decided to toss it in my cart.  A day or so after I got home, I made Maple Dill Carrots.  We don't use dill a lot in our household, but we didn't have any on hand until I brought this discounted bit home so I decided to dry it and store it for future use.  As you can see from this picture when I first hung it up in the kitchen, it was not at all wilted.  It was in really good shape for being a manager's special.

It wilted fast though!  Here it is just 24 hours later.  I think this is about the time I made the carrots.

I let it hang and do its thang for about 3 weeks before I used my trusty little coffee grinder (last used for breadcrumbs) to chop it up (minus the tougher, woody stems).

I'm storing it in a little spice jar I got at IKEA.  I think I got a 4-pack for $3.49?  I might be a little off on the price there, but I'm a bargain shopper so it was a good deal, no matter what the actual amount was.  Anywho, the spice jars are good size and have an etched glass band across their middle for writing on.   I wrote on this one with a pencil, but might have to find something else to use because it can easily be rubbed off.

See the woody stems to the right?

Any suggestions on what I could write with that could be cleaned off when I use the jar for something else?
I have loads of Sharpies, but was worried it wouldn't clean off.

  1. How about Dry Erase Markers? I use them to label my children's workbooks, and eventually it's mostly rubbed off. Easily cleanable! And it's got that nice dark lettering bonus! Let me know how it works... Love those jars.

Sharpie comes off with nail polish remover. Just check your surface first to be sure it can stand up to polish remover!
