DIY Chick Feeder

Last Summer we let our Silkies hatch some eggs.   Did we need more chickens?  NO.  But baby chicks are so cute and Silkies are so eager to sit on a clutch, I just couldn't help myself. 

The hatch date snuck up on us and we weren't prepared to feed them.  We have a little feeder like this one, but it requires more room than we had.  We like to just block off a couple nesting boxes for the first several days when new chicks arrive so we needed something more vertical with a smaller footprint.  A jar feeder like this would have been perfect, but we didn't have one.  We have a jar waterer, but not the feeder.

I thought for sure we could DIY a feeder so I rummaged through our recyclables and came up with a cleaner jug and a yogurt tub and this is what we ended up with.

I cut three triangles spaced out on the side, near the bottom of the yogurt tub and kept the lid on.  I cut the bottom off the cleaner jug and washed it out really well to be sure it was safe.  Once I filled up the yogurt tub I placed it in the jug bottom, shook out some feed and it was ready to go.

This DIY chick feeder was super easy, didn't cost us a dime and the materials were still recyclable once we were done with it.  Can't go wrong with that.
