Simple and Delicious Hot Chocolate

Winter is officially less than 2 weeks old and we've already been blessed with 8+ inches of snow.  We've had some fun outside taking pictures, sledding and building a Shrek-inspired snowman.  (Hubz loves to build snowmen.  I think it's cute.)  After our clothes are wet and our cheeks and hands too cold, we make our way inside for some yummy, warming hot chocolate.

This is my go-to recipe.  It's very simple with only a few ingredients that I happen to keep stocked in my pantry. (I have a strange affinity for sweetened condensed milk.  My Mother says it's not natural.)

Mug of hot cocoa

1 can sweetened condensed milk
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa
6 cups water

Whisk the cocoa and sweetened condensed milk together in a medium saucepan until the cocoa is well incorporated.  Add in the water, continue to whisk until it comes to your desired temperature.

See how simple that was?

Even though sweetened condensed milk is a mass-produced product, I don't mind using it because it only contains natural ingredients.  Here's a comparison of a can of it against a packet of hot cocoa mix (Land O Lakes brand).

Can't go wrong with milk and sugar.

I hope you're enjoying winter as much as we are.  Happy New Year!

  1. I am going to give this a try! We also tend to have mass quanities of condensed milk on hand. Have you tried making caramel from it yet?

  2. Quite a difference in the ingredients, I'd definitely go with the canned milk!
