DIY Scented Dishwashing Powder

I've been experimenting for the past several months with homemade cleaning products.  I've not found a laundry soap I love yet, but I have discovered a dishwashing soap that works really well.

I've used this formula several times and, when making the last batch, I decided to try mixing up a scented version.  My favorite dishwashing liquid is lavender and mint scented.  I had lavender essential oil on hand so I gave it a try and am happy with the results.

ingredients for homemade dishwashing powder

Scented Dishwashing Powder

1 cup baking soda
1 cup borax
2 cups washing soda
30 drops of your favorite essential oil (optional)

Combine the dry ingredients together and mix well while breaking up any clumps.  Add in your essential oil and mix again with your hands to help incorporate the oil well.

The Borax and Washing Soda can get really clumpy.

Store in your favorite 4 cup container.  I use an old dishwashing powder container, but this recipe also fits well in a quart size jar.  You only need to use 1-2 tablespoons per load which means one batch (4 cups) will last for 32-64 loads.

I've been sharing the recipe with family members and it seems that this formula doesn't work as well for those with harder water, so please keep that in mind.

Aside from lavender, I think a citrus-y scented version would be nice.  Lemon or orange, maybe?  I definitely need to pick up more essential oils.  I'll have to add a citrus one to my list.

If you give this formula a try, let me know what you think.
